My hip is still not 100% although it is getting better.  I don't want to run and ruin all of the resting I have been doing.  This morning I went to the gym and did the elliptical for 4 miles.  It was my first time on an elliptical.  I liked that I got a good workout and it was easy on my hip.  However, I am missing actually running.  The first half of the workout I didn't have the elliptical on any resistance and my heels kept coming off the machine.  Then I figured out you could add resistance and it make the workout much more enjoyable and more like actual running.  I might do the elliptical a little next week as well and then add in some running.

That sucks about your hip. The elliptical will help out in the meantime. I hope you recover soon. I know it sucks not being able to run (speaking from my previous week of not running). Despite the injury, I hope you have a great weekend Michelle!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Sat, Jan 02, 2010 at 22:47:44 from 24.8.167.243

You're smart to take it easy with the hip. The elliptical is a good option. I'm glad it is available to you.

From Tracy on Sat, Jan 02, 2010 at 22:54:20 from 173.23.75.96

It's great that you have another option while you're getting that hip to cooperate. I bet it won't be long before you're out there again!

I love using the elliptical on alt. days. I used mine all summer when I was recovering from different things.

Hope your hip is good as new soon. It's hard not to run when you're "almost" healed, so kudos to you for being good and not running.

I did the elliptical again today.  I think I will do the elliptical tomorrow as well and then try running on Thursday.  My calves are really sore from the Saturday elliptical workout.  I can tell that different muscles are being used than in running.

I also did a 60 minute P90X workout, core synergistics.  I have taken two weeks off of P90X because my friend I do the workout with was out of town so I just ran more and then hurt my hip.  It is good to get back to the P90X, but it was tough!  I can tell I took a little time off.

I have a goal to eat more fruits and vegetables.  Really, if you are going to get the recommended servings you have to have a fruit or vegetable every meal and for snacks.  I have only eaten an orange so far today but I am trying to be more conscious about increasing my intake.

That's a very good goal. I tend to do better on the fruit intake than on the vegetables. So far today (breakfast and lunch), I've had 1/2 grapefruit, some baby carrots, a big celery stick, and some grapes.

I wondered whether you'd get back to P90X today. Good job!

I did the elliptical again this morning.  My hip is feeling a lot better and I am going to try running on Thursday.  Yesterday I jogged about two blocks to get my son from school and my hip didn't hurt at all so that is promising.  I am excited to run on Thursday.

I slept in this morning and it was wonderful!  I was ready to do my P90X workout at 8:40 when my friend usually shows up.  I waited, then made my bed, then got me kids dressed, then looked at birthday cakes for my daughter.  I was wondering where she was when I realized at 8:55, I was supposed to go to her house this morning.  It was pretty funny.  So I called her and then got to her house quickly and we did the cardio workout from P90X.  It was a good workout.

Incidentally, I can feel that my hips are tired from the workout.  Not sore but there was a lot of kicking front, side and back, and I can feel my hips are being worked.  Hopefully that helps strengthen my hip.

Good job on P90X today.

Birthday cakes for your daughter? When is her birthday? Shouldn't you be looking at birthday cakes for yourself? That reminds me. I should ask Sam if he wants a birthday cake (he doesn't like chocolate (go figure) and we're not much of a cake family).

From Michelle on Wed, Jan 06, 2010 at 13:12:23 from 63.227.3.181

Madeline's birthday is the 10, this Sunday. I usually make a fun cake for the kids but for me, I am buying an ice cream cake. I don't really care for cake but ice cream, I love! Maybe Sam would want doughnuts, that sounds tasty.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Wed, Jan 06, 2010 at 13:16:06 from 24.8.167.243

Ice cream cake sounds much better than regular cake! I'll have to remember that when my birthday comes around.

I'll have to ask Sam about doughnuts. I normally make a breakfast cake on birthdays. I'll have to see which he prefers. We normally do a birthday breakfast.

From The Quiet Pirate on Wed, Jan 06, 2010 at 13:26:37 from 24.199.205.252

I've heard that p90x is a great workout. Funny story about getting locations mixed up. How nice you've got someone to "kick it up" with.

I'm sure your hip is getting stronger with the workouts. It's a good sign that it didn't hurt.

Will you still be running on Thursday if the Freezing Fog sticks around?

I love cake and ice cream. Birthday Breakfasts sound fun, but I'm thinking they'd require too much work at such an early hour. Cold Stone has very yummy ice cream cakes.

My daughter wants a jell-o cake for her birthday at the end of the month. Strange girl!

From Michelle on Wed, Jan 06, 2010 at 13:35:12 from 63.227.3.181

I have never heard of jelly cake, it does sound a little strange. Yes I will run in the freezing fog, I will just have to bundle up.

I got my b-day cake last year from Cold Stone and I liked it but I think I am going to try Baskin Robins this year.

From RAD on Wed, Jan 06, 2010 at 13:42:39 from 67.172.229.125

mmm...ice cream cakes. QP - a jello cake? What is that girl thinking? I'd think she'd want a chocolate PB one!

So, Michelle...when IS your b-day? I'm assuming it's soon. Nice work getting that p90X workout in, those things are brutal! However, no hip pain is great. Any balancing maneuvers will help with strength.

From Michelle on Wed, Jan 06, 2010 at 13:44:54 from 63.227.3.181

From The Quiet Pirate on Wed, Jan 06, 2010 at 13:47:26 from 24.199.205.252

I don't know what she's thinking with jell-o. I had a thought to take a big punch bowl and make a rainbow layered jell-o cake in it. Maybe we could put something fun in the middle of the mold. She likes to act like Dwight sometimes, but I think a stapler would be a waste.

I ran 3 easy slow miles on the treadmill this morning.  My hip hurt a bit when I woke up but I stretched it before I ran, after I ran and iced.  It didn't hurt at all while I was running so hopefully it is getting better.

It is really cold outside this morning and there is a it of snow on the ground.  Yesterday Carolyn gave me some Yaktraks for my birthday, I wanted to try them out but my neighbor likes running indoors when it is cold and snowy.  I am sure I will find a time soon to use them.

I got a nice birthday surprise this morning.  When I came home from running there was a cake in the oven that my husband made before he went to work.  We call it yellow cake and eat it for breakfast.  I love it warm with milk poured on top.  I am going to go enjoy a piece now(maybe two.)

This morning my friend I do P90X with called and canceled.  It is always a hard moment when I realize I am on my own to motivate myself to complete the whole workout.  I still did the planned workout so I am happy about that.  It was an hour and fifteen minutes of shoulders, arms, and abs.  I prefer cardio to strength training so it is really good for me to get strength training in.  I don't really enjoy it, but now it is done.

My kids did the cool down with me and my oldest commented that he was doing a really good job with the exercises.  I like to see them try and exercise with me.

Great job motivating yourself! You've got the commitment within yourself. I know you usual exercise with others, but you've got the strength to do it on your own when you need to.

kudos on the self motivation to get a p90x workout done...especially when it's one you don't enjoy.

It's great your kids will participate with you on some level. I asked one of mine to do a video workout with me and I was laughed at and told, "No one cares about that stuff but you, mom."

It was nice to get a longer run in today after taking the last two weeks a bit easy.  I ran with Carolyn and Michelle today.  We ran a route I had done once before that wanders quite a bit through some neighborhoods.  I was glad that I remembered the route from the last time I ran it.  The terrain was a little difficult in a few spots with some snow and ice covered sidewalks and a short distance on a gravel path that was covered with frozen snow.  Luckily no one got hurt.  I slipped one time but didn't fall.

It turned out to be a nice run with a bit warmer temperatures than expected, and great conversation.  Thanks for running with us Carolyn, I always enjoy Saturday morning runs.

When I got home my family was leaving to go buy Krispie Kreme doughnuts.  My husband, Ben, loves to take the kids out and buy doughnuts on Saturday mornings.  I kind of have a love/hate relationship with that habit because I love doughnuts but, I hate starting my morning with so much fat and sugar.  I also hate the fact that I can't just eat one, doughnuts call to me and I must eat more and more:)

I like Saturday morning runs with you too. I felt pretty good about today's run, despite the hills and the snow.

Don't eat too many donuts. I just drove Jacob to the school and stopped at Lamar's on the way. I waited in the car and sent him in. He got two donuts but only ate one. I'm going to save the other for him to have later, even though he said I could have it. Fortunately it's not my favorite kind.

Great Saturday! A good run with good friends, and donuts to boot?

I saw that our Krispy Kreme store is advertising triple chocolate donuts. I usually don't indulge, but with a name like triple chocolate, maybe it's worth checking out.

I ran my standard 4 mile route this morning.  It went well.

Over the weekend I bought new shoes.  The running store employees laughed at my old shoes because they were very worn and not good quality.  They had a video analysis of you running on a treadmill.  I could see me ankles roll in each time in the old pair.  In the new pair, they have more support and my ankle rolls straight instead of collapsing in.  Hopefully they are good shoes for me.

My hip is still achy at times, but getting better.  I was also going to do P90X this morning but my friend canceled again and since I had already been running and I have a busy day today I skipped the extra workout.  I have already got a lot done in the time I would normally be doing P90X, a good way to start a busy day.

I briefly watched an infomercial on P90X and thought it looked interesting. Do you feel like it gives you a good workout? How long have you been doing it?

From Michelle on Mon, Jan 11, 2010 at 12:52:58 from 63.227.3.181

I have been doing P90X for about 4 months, I think. It is pretty intense but if you can't keep up then you just modify with less weight or less reps. Carolyn and I had an arm wrestle last week because I have been doing P90X and she does the Shred video. It was a tie. Neither of us could get the other to move and we weren't budging. After a while we called it a tie. So I guess P90X is at least as good as the shred. The hard part is each workout is 60-90 minutes. Sometimes that feels pretty long to me especially if you are also running on the same day.

From The Quiet Pirate on Mon, Jan 11, 2010 at 15:10:27 from 24.199.205.252

New shoes are so much fun. In my head, I just know they're going to be faster than my old ones.

I have a co-worker who has been doing that p90x almost everyday for 2 weeks, and she said she's lost 4 inches off her waist. She didn't have a big waist to begin with, so I'm impressed with it.

The time commitment is a hug factor. But it gets results!

It's great you're having a productive Monday morning. Sometimes Mondays are hard to get started.

From Michelle on Mon, Jan 11, 2010 at 15:35:50 from 63.227.3.181

I believe it. P90X really does get results. You are supposed to do the workouts 6 days a week. I have only been doing them 3 days a week mixed with running on other days. I lost some weight and slimmed down a bit as soon as I started the P90X.

This morning I ran on the Hiline Canal trail.  There was more snow then expected covering the trail, it was a bit slick in some areas.  I ran with Ali and Carolyn.  It was an enjoyable run.  We planned on running 6 miles and I was feeling really good at the end of the run.  I like to speed up at the end and run it in fast.  I was feeling the desire to speed up and was thinking about running faster to the end and then Ali caught her foot in a frozen rut of dirt and twisted her ankle at 5.65 miles.  Carolyn and I walked with Ali the rest of the way.  I hope her ankle heals quickly and isn't hurt too much.  This was Ali's first run outside since she has started training for a half marathon,  Too bad her first experience didn't turn out better.

It was fun running with you and Ali this morning. It's too bad the trail was in kind of bad shape. And I hope that Ali's ankle is okay and that she's willing to run with us again.

That really is stinky that it was her first outdoor run! I hope she gets better and is still up to training for Moab (I'm assuming). You kept a nice pace in the snow and slick! Keep up the good work!! Oh, and I'm glad to hear nothing about the hip - I hope it's gone for good!! --well, the pain that is, you may need a hip :)

I hope the pain is gone too. I felt a little achy after the run. But now 7 hours later it feels great. Even better then before the run. I am glad about that. I think taking some extra time off this past week helped it heal more.

I love it when there are days off of work.  Today three great things have already happened because of no work.

1.  I got to sleep in an hour

2. I got to run with Carolyn

3. I got to run for 6 miles

I love the extra time!  The six miles felt good not too hard, but a good run.  My husband left 2 hours ago for a 3-8 mile run.(He hadn't decided how the blister on his foot would affect his run)  I am thinking he chose more around 10 miles but even then he has been gone for a long time.  Hopefully he is not limping slowly home on a sore blister foot.

*Update* My husband is in deed crazy.  It turns out the 3-8 miles he was planning on went so well and he was feeling good, so he decided to make it 10.  After he ran 10 miles he was feeling good so he, "decided to add a 6 mile cool down"  Crazy.  The most he has ran in the last few months is 8.  He is now limping all over with blisters on his feet but feeling really good about running 16 miles.

It was nice to wake up this morning feeling tired like a Monday, but then realize it was actually Tuesday.

I did the standard 4 mile route this morning.  I was tired and fatigued but got is done.  I had clothing issues today.  The running pants I wear most often have been getting old and when I put them on this morning a hole ripped where they had been getting threadbare.  Goodbye to my favorite running pants.  While running, I dealt with some chaffing on the right side of my back near my shoulder.  I tried to adjust my clothing to stop the chaffing which kind of worked.  Hopefully this doesn't become a regular occurrence.

Well, you've run farther today than I have.

Too bad about the clothing issues. If you find you have a spot that continues to chafe, try just rubbing some deodorant on it when you get dressed to run. I do that because it's more convenient than getting some Body Glide.

In other news, my short term goal of running a marathon this summer is going to be put on hold because I am pregnant.  My new goal is to run as much and as long into pregnancy as I can.  In the past I have usually ran until about 4-5 months.  I would like to run longer this time.  I am 9 weeks right now and due August 20.

Today my neighbor who I run with could not go running.  So I decided to wake up a little earlier and run 6 miles instead of 4.  I think I was a little anxious about waking up earlier because I kept waking up throughout the night thinking it was time to run when it was only 2:15 then 4:45 and then 5:45.  My run was one that makes you fall in love with running again.  It was very calm and serene.  I didn't feel tired and I was able to watch the sun rise and listen to the Wicked soundtrack which I enjoy running to.  All in all, a great run!

I coordinated successfully with Carolyn and Michelle about our run this morning but only did half of the coordination with Ali.  I felt bad that we weren't able to meet up with her as planned because I forgot to call her and confirm the time and place, woops.

We ran an 8 mile loop that I have ran before but the other direction.  It was a good run.  Physically I felt strong but mentally I didn't really feel like running today.  As always, I am glad I went out and did it.  There were a few times on the run that I felt like running faster.  I know I can run faster than I do but I don't think I can sustain the speed for very long.  I worry about running out of steam in the middle of a long run so I usually keep my pace a little slower.

The start of my run today felt really cold.  While running I warmed up and took my hat and gloves off but then I was cold and had to put them back on.  I couldn't quite get it right.  I am excited for warmer weather but we still have awhile to wait.

The beginning of my run is uphill and usually my neighbor and I start too fast and I get pretty tired by the time I reach the top of the hill.  I have been making an effort to slow down at the beginning so I don't drain too much energy at the very beginning.  I think it helped today.  We weren't super fast still but I felt great on the run.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Mon, Jan 25, 2010 at 09:42:18 from 24.8.167.243

It was cold this morning, and that is a significant hill at the beginning of your route. I think an effort to slow down at the beginning is a good idea. I always do my first mile (or 2 or 3) really slow, even if it's not up hill.

And don't worry about not being super fast. You are super fast when you want to be, but most of your runs should just be easy, conversational pace.

It is challenging to get the wardrobe just right for winter! I often end up wearing too much and then leaving it along the trail to pick up on the way back. Honestly, its usually warm enough here for shorts, but I often don't put them on, because I don't trust that I'll actually warm up.

When I got home I took the garbage cans out to the street and decided to throw a few things away that were in the garage.  I have been wanting to clean the garage for a long time but never make the time.  I started throwing things away and organizing a little and now one hour later, I have a clean garage!  It was a great post run activity while my kids are still asleep.

While running I was crossing a neighborhood intersection and saw a car approaching.  I could tell they weren't going to stop for me and sure enough they weren't planning on it.  I pulled back and ran in place, at the last second the driver saw me and slammed his breaks on.  If I hadn't pulled back I think I might have been hit.  I am glad I was paying attention!

I did a P90X workout today and it was HARD.  I probably did about 300 push-ups,  My knees are red and sore from too many push-ups.  There was also an ab workout in the segment.  After the workout, I was sore and tired.

Today I ran really slow.  My body is tired both from lack of sleep and just not enough energy.  When I started running, I could feel all the sore muscles from doing lots of push-ups yesterday.  I left earlier than normal this morning.  It was nice to be home a little earlier as well.

It's fine to run slowly, especially if that's what your body needs. Get some rest today and tomorrow so that we can have a good run on Saturday.

I talked to Carly this morning and she's up for 8 miles on the trail tomorrow. I'll check with the others and see if they want to meet up. We'll miss you. I think you're the glue that holds our little running group together. I'll try to be the scotch tape in your absence tomorrow.

Sorry your energy is gone, I hope you can get some decent sleep and rest to be back on your game on Monday! 'Normal' Saturdays are strange after you're used to the early long runs - but you'll enjoy it after you get past feeling bad for not running :) After a couple weeks it gets hard to get back into it! I'm sure you won't miss as many as I did.

I feel great after taking the weekend to rest.  I have a lot more energy then I did last week.  This morning there was a bit of snow outside and my neighbor doesn't like running in snow so we had decided last night to go to the indoor track.  We were to meet at 6:00.  I sat in my car and waited but she didn't come and there were no lights on at her house so I left.  I did the first two miles alone and then she showed up after having slept past her alarm.  I guess a benefit of track running is that she was able to join me half way through.

There is a boot camp that meets Mon, Wed, Fri at the Rec center.  Today the instructor had them run 4 laps then do some strength training, then back for 4 more laps(the track is 13 laps for a mile).  They came up to the track a few times and the competitiveness in me kicked in.  I just had to pass all of them and couldn't let anyone pass me. This made me run pretty quick.  There was one man who was pretty fast and I could only hold him off for one lap, then he passed me.  Other than that, I was able to pass all of them(about 20 people).  I know it is silly competition because they had been doing other exercises in between and looked really tired but still, I couldn't let the boot camp win, and they didn't.

I love when my husband has the day off of work!  I slept in and had a great night sleep and then was able to run 6 miles.

At the beginning of my run I was approaching an intersection where I turn onto a bigger street(Quebec).  When I was still a block from the intersection another runner past by.  I was glad I was a block behind because if I was closer I would feel the need to speed up and pass the man.  However, when I got to the intersection and started running behind him the gap starting getting smaller.  I tried to not look at him and keep my pace nice and easy.  This continued for awhile until we hit a hill.  I usually accelerate going up a hill, and sure enough I passed the man.

I set out to have a nice easy slow run and it still was but I just can't help that little competitive edge that kicks in.  I know it is good to be a bit competitive when racing but I need to also be able to enjoy a slow run and not have to prove myself, to myself.

I got passed by some really fast runner when I was going north on Quebec towards the end of my run this morning. I slept so good last night it was sad when the early alarm went off to go running.  I went inside today because it was pretty cold and a fair amount of snow on the ground.  I used to hate running indoors but I am now learning to appreciate having an indoor option.  It is nice that I still ran 4 miles and am not sitting here freezing cold.  My neighbor used to never run in the winter because she would loose her motivation and would not go outside.  Now, she will brave the cold with me most of the time.  I guess we have helped each other find a happy medium.

Running on a flat track inside also helped us to run faster.  After the first mile my neighbors watch said we ran a 7:50 pace.  We were running really fast and I was tired but I am pretty sure her watch was a bit off.  I don't think we were that fast but still, we ran a lot faster then we run on the hills outside.

flat and warm you could do a 7:50. One piece of advice given to me that I really appreciated about track running was to make sure you alternate directions. The way your body pushes to go around the curves needs to be switched occasionally. However, on some tracks you have to run only one direction - this may be the case with you, but if you can try to alternate miles/directions.

Nice job simply getting up and out - that Monday alarm is the worst one!! Even with getting up early Sat and Sun, I hate Monday's early ring!

I met Carolyn and Michelle for what was going to be an 8 mile run at the Hiline Trail.  Carolyn ran 18 today and wanted Michelle and me to run 9 so she would be half way done at the end of our run.  So, one more mile, no big deal, we did 9 with Carolyn.

There was quite a bit of snow on the trail today.  We guessed between 40% and 50% of the trail was covered in snow.  I am really looking forward to summer.

I had to slow down a bit as the run progressed.  I get winded at my old normal pace.  My new easy normal pace has slowed about 30 seconds.  I am lucky to have good running friends that will slow down a bit with me.

As I am writing this, Carolyn probably has about 1-2 miles left on her 18 miler.  Way to go Carolyn!!

We are off to take the kids to the swimming pool!

I felt a bit tired running today, but was happy to find out at the end of the run that we ran the same AP as yesterday.  It was nice to have the weather a bit warmer and best of all, it was light when we started running and not just at the end!

Today I have a crazy  busy day.  I have to make five pans of rice to bake this morning meet at our church to set up for a dinner/activity tonight and then after set up I have to prepare 24 fleece blankets because I just found out yesterday afternoon that the person who was supposed to be in charge of blankets for our service project is not going to do it, so it falls on me.  Then there is parent teacher conference and piano lessons not to mention laundry and feeding my children.  After that is all done I still have to attend the activity tonight.  I am going to be tired tonight!

Today I did the P90X core synergistics video.  It was a pretty pathetic attempt at a workout.  I have a new friend that I started doing the P90X workouts with and when our children are together they either get along great or really fight and have a hard time.  Today they had a hard time and it seemed like every 3-4 minutes I had to take care of kid issues.  Consequently, not the best workout.  I guess it is to be expected when two moms try to exercise with 6 kids around.

Back to running in the dark.  I ran alone this morning, my neighbor's husband is out of town.  I really enjoy when I can be alone, set my own pace, listen to music, and just zone out a bit.  I ran with a little rock in my shoe for 2 miles hoping it would fall into a spot that didn't bother me.  It just kept getting worse and more annoying so I finally stopped and got it out, I felt much better after that.

I tried to think of pounding the pavement, and not bouncing too vertically thanks to Carolyn.  Also, a few months ago while on a run with Carolyn she told me to imagine a tree or object up ahead was putting out a magnetic force and drawing you in.  I use this a lot at the end of my run when I am going up a hill.  It helps me to pull myself towards the top.  Thanks for all the tips Carolyn!

Today was the Canyonlands half marathon and it was the BEST race ever!  I had a great time and really enjoyed it.

This past week I have had a few little pregnancy issues with some spotting so I was a bit concerned about whether I should run the race or not.  I took three days off of running to try and let my body rest but I really didn't want to miss the race.  Things were going better the last two days so I decided to take it really easy and run the race but not race it.  I ran at a decent pace for the first 6 miles and then let my running friend, Michelle, go ahead without me because I didn't want to continue pushing the pace.  I decided I would just enjoy the run and be glad that I could run 13 miles at 18 weeks pregnant.  I zoned out with music, let a lot of people pass me, and didn't care that my time was going to be really slow.

I felt great throughout the race and kept smiling because I felt SO good and wasn't putting forth that much effort.  The best part came when I crossed the finish line and got a PR even when I was trying to take it easy.  I really enjoyed the run and had fun which is what I shooting for the PR is just an added bonus.

I don't have my offiicial time yet, so I will add that later.  The sleep time between 4 and 8 hours means I tossed and turned all night with a little anxiety and debating whether I should wear leggings or go without.  I went without and that was the right choice.  I am not sure how much I actually slept but I think I will sleep good tonight!

I feel like I haven't blogged in awhile.  I have been a bit out of it, but I think I am back to a consistent schedule now.  My foot is hurting me so I hope that doesn't become an issue.

The 4 miles today felt sluggish and a bit slow.  I think it comes from running the 1/2 on Saturday and then coming back to hills and higher altitude.  I really like racing at lower altitude, it feels so much easier to be able to actually breath.

Is it that toe that's still hurting you? Maybe you need to get it looked at.

Good job getting back to the routine.

One of the benefits of training at high altitude is that it makes racing a lower altitude feel easier. Hooray for living in Denver!

From The Quiet Pirate on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 15:52:20 from 24.199.205.252

Denver is so beautiful- the altitude training is just a great bonus! But it does seem harder to breathe and run when you've been away.

Hope your toe/foot gets better.

Stink! I hope the pain goes away and quickly. Gotta love the 'professional' air you get to train in :)

I'm sure the sluggishness is the 'hang over' from the race. Take it easy and heal quickly.

Today I did some hard core cross training.  1.5 hours of snow shoveling.  The snow was wet and heavy.  I am really tired now.

Last night we were coming home from the store during the storm and there were about 6 cars stuck on a hill by our house.  They couldn't make it up the hill because of the slickness of the snow.  I felt bad for them but if we were to stop, we would also get stuck.  It is no wonder I get tired running up a hill that cars get stuck on in the snow.

yikes! that hill sounds scary - to run and drive up. Shoveling snow is a GREAT x-trainer, I think it burns more calories than running. Especially 6-8 inches of heavy wet stuff!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 16:52:06 from 198.241.174.15

Hmmm. That makes me wonder how much I should pay Sam for shoveling our snow today. He worked really hard. I helped him just a little bit.

It got really bad really fast last night. I headed out with Jacob after dinner. We were going to go to Barnes & Noble. We got as far as Holly on County Line and turned around and came back home and barely made it. I turned on my flashers because I was struggling so much.

Thank heavens it's better now.

Sorry about cancelling on you today. I guess it wasn't the snow so much as the chaos at my house. Tomorrow should be better.

I went to the gym and worked out on the elliptical today.  My foot is still hurting so I thought it would be best to do something with less impact.

I did some research and I think what I have is called turf toe.  It is most common with football and soccer players but the description sounds exactly like what I am experiencing.  It is basically a stretched ligament from bending the toe back too far, or a really bad stubbed toe.  I have been icing and taping a bit and I can tell it is feeling a bit better.  Hopefully it heals quickly.  I have no idea what happened, I can't remember any specific time of hurting my toe or foot.  Mysterious injuries are really annoying!

I saw Carolyn twice on my run this morning and my friend Ali once.  It was kind of fun to pass people I know.  I passed Carolyn when she had about 4 miles left and then also when she had  2.5 miles.

I also learned a lesson this morning.  I have to run with some belly support.  My pregnant belly isn't that big yet but when I run it hurts when I don't have something to give it a little extra support.  The two pants I usually wear have thicker, tighter waist bands that give me support.  Today I ran in new pants that are low waist and pretty loose.  Not such a good idea.  I seriously contemplated walking home through a short cut at mile 1 but thought I better keep trying to see if the pain would go away.  After a mile of debating run/walk, finish/quit, I realized it was pretty warm out and I was wearing a jacket so I took my jacket off and tied it tightly around my waist.  It helped a ton.  The rest of the run was bearable pain.

I bought a lightweight support band last week but it was dirty this morning.  I need to be more faithful at washing it or just wear it dirty.

It was fun to see you this morning. When I had about 5.5 miles to go, I was at the corner of Colorado and University and decided to run the better part of my normal 6 mile loop in the reverse direction with the realization that I would probably see you.

I'm impressed that you're able to run this far into your pregnancy. Maybe we need to get you another support band thingie.

From The Quiet Pirate on Tue, Mar 30, 2010 at 14:54:00 from 24.199.205.252

my vote: don't worry about doing laundry every day......just wear it dirty. NO ONE is going to care how stinky your belly band is when you're out running in the early morning.

If the stink starts to bug you, then it's time for laundry.

My motto is: It's probably still good.

And of course kudos to you for your running dedication.

You're doing great on your running! I'm with QP, just wear it dirty - no one knows! I actually wear my mine over my clothes so it doesn't get as stinky, then I always pull it off when I'm done and just fold it back up and I keep it in my purse for safe keeping :)

My neighbor and running buddy has been out of town this week but she got back yesterday.  It was fun to have someone to talk to this morning, but I also enjoy being alone and listening to music.  She wasn't on board with adding a Wednesday run because she doesn't want to wake up early 4 days in a row.  So I guess I will get one day a week with alone running and conversation the other days.  I think it is a good way to break it up.

The run today felt great.  It was a little cooler then yesterday but still very pleasant compared to a month ago!

I almost forgot until Carolyn called to ask.  I had my ultrasound yesterday, it's a boy!  The baby looks healthy and everything is going well.  It is exciting to know the gender, the baby seems more real and I look forward to a new son.

I was thinking today that I felt like a little bit of a slacker for only running 6 miles on a Saturday "long run".  Then I realized how humorous that was because a little over a year ago I had only ran 6 miles maybe 3 times.  I have been running for many years but only 3 miles for exercise and fitness.  It has only been the last year that I have increased mileage and gotten a bit better at running.  I am glad that I feel like a bit of a slacker for "only" running 6.

During the run I saw a friend of mine out walk/jogging her dog. She was going up a hill(glenneagles). It was nice motivation to run up the hill and try and catch her. I finally caught her at the very top. She ran up some of the hill and I mean ran. She is starting to run a bit more and doesn't understand slow down and keep going. She runs fast for a minute or two and then can't run anymore so she'll walk. It was funny to chase her up the hill and not be able to catch her as fast as I wanted to. But good motivation to run faster.

Carolyn- It was Lara Olson. She has bought into this new exercise plan of getting your heart rate up for 3 minutes then going back to resting then 3 more minutes harder activity then back to resting. The book she read claims that many marathon runners have unhealthy hearts because they have their heart rates at medium levels for too long as opposed to high then low. I don't really buy it, but she is convinced.

It is nice to be at my parents house and have someone avaliable to watch my children while I run.  I didn't run until 7:15 and was able to go further than normal because I didn't have to rush home.  It was a nice run.  I noticed there were less hills but the two hills I ran up were a bit steeper then the hills I usually run in Colorado.  One thing that I noticed on my run was how much garbage and junk was in people's yards.  I guess I have gotten used to living and running in a covenant community where yards must be kept clean.  A ton of yards I ran passed, looked like they could start a local junk yard collection.  I guess that's what you get with country living, open spaces and no covenants.

there is something nice about living in a community where people take pride in their house and yards...or at least take care of it well enough to keep the HOA off their back.

I've run by a few homes out here and the theme song to "Sanford & Son" starts playing in my head...often with a little banjo added in for effect.

Glad you got some extra you time and enjoyed a nice run.

This morning when I opened the door to run it was pouring rain/sleet.  I decided to wait a few minutes to see if the weather would lighten up.  Luckily, after 15 minutes it looked a lot better.  Today I ran the opposite direction of yesterday and the yards were a lot cleaner with less junk, that was nice.  It was a good run, I am lucky to have help with my kids this week so I can run a little more and later in the morning.

I wasn't planning on running this morning because I had some earlier meetings and I wanted to sleep in after driving home on Friday and just relax a bit.  However, I woke up earlier than I wanted so I decided why not go run a quick 4 miles.  Well, they weren't really quick miles but that OK.  It was a nice run.

Two weeks ago I wrote about my ankles hurting when I ran for the first couple of miles.  When I was in Utah, I had no pain while running but when I ran today my ankles hurt again.  I don't know if it is because there are more hills, elevation difference, or maybe because there is more concrete here instead of pavement.  I wish my ankles didn't hurt and I hope it doesn't continue.

I don't have a garmin so I think I added about .2 to my normal 4 mile run.  I wanted to even the week out and not be left with a .8 in my total.

Today was a bit of a sad realization but inevitable.  I usually run with my neighbor, Michelle.  I was out of town last week and we both ran alone.  She is getting faster, and I am getting slower.  Typically, when I am not pregnant, I have a little more speed then she does but we still run well together.  This morning, she was fast, I could not keep up.  She said she increased her speed last week while running alone and realized she could go faster and enjoy it.  Not the same story for me.  Anyway, I kept up with her for 3 miles but knowing the 4th mile was all uphill and already feeling beat, I told her to run ahead.  I was surprised how much distance she put between us in the last mile, good for her.  So, I think I am running alone most of the time now.  I can still definitely continue running, maybe more jogging, just not at 9 mm.  I am 22 weeks in my pregnancy and an easy comfortable pace for me is 10-10:30 mm.  I hope to keep that up for a few more months still.  But if I am going to continue running/jogging, it has to slow down so I can do it and still enjoy it.  It is time to embrace slow running.

That is a hard realization, but at least this is something that is only temporary. You are midway through a healthy and happy pregnancy, and you have to enjoy that! You wouldn't enjoy running if every day was a struggle to keep a faster pace than you need to right now.

From The Quiet Pirate on Mon, Apr 19, 2010 at 10:19:35 from 24.199.205.252

I didn't run when I was pregnant. Wasn't something I was doing back then. I remember I tried to run from my house to my car once while I was pregnant, and I physically could not do it.

I know you're disappointed that you're slowing down, but it is for such a wonderful reason. I am so impressed at how you and RAD get out there and run with your cute baby bumps keeping fit and being strong. You're doing what I never dreamed of being able to do.

Running alone can be good for your soul, and maybe your friend Michelle can run with you on her recovery days until you're ready to come back and kick her trash.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Mon, Apr 19, 2010 at 12:19:43 from 24.8.167.243

Running alone is not so bad. I do it all the time.

You're doing a great job with running through this pregnancy. Really. And I think that slowing down is a good idea. It's better to do that and be able to keep going, than to push yourself too hard and get yourself into some kind of trouble or get burned out. You won't be pregnant forever, and you will be in such a good place physically after this baby is born.

I was taking to Liz yesterday and she wants to get back into running, but she's got a long way to go. You'll be in a much better position after you have your baby.

From RAD on Mon, Apr 19, 2010 at 15:45:35 from 67.172.229.125

I understand COMPLETELY! I can hardly keep up with the back of my running group anymore, it's mentally challenging. We're so used to pushing ourselves and to have to change that mentality is difficult. To be happy about just getting to run - isn't always easy. BUT try! I think about how many people would love to just be able to run a mile, and I can still do it - even pregnant. Doesn't matter that it's a 10mm, I'm doing it.

Don't worry about the alone factor - I'm with QP, maybe change days so that you can run on her 'recovery' days with her. Find someone who wants to START running and run/walk with them. Find a gym and run on a TM next to someone walking - that helps me :)

Give it just a few short months and you'll be back to kicking trash - and better conditioned for running with extra weight! Strong and faster - just consider it 'training in disguise' :)

BTW, the distance from that corner to your house, if you turn left on Princeton at the bottom of the hill, is 0.40. From your house back to that corner going the other direction (so it's the distance if you go straight at the Princeton corner) is 0.35.

This morning I was supposed to get out the door 3 minutes early and my neighbor was leaving a few minutes later.  We thought this would allow us to meet up at the end of the run and walk a cool down home together.  I hesitated in bed a few minutes too long and left maybe 1 minute early but probably not even that.  At about mile 1.5 I could see my neighbor behind me in the distance, so I tried to keep up the pace so she wouldn't pass me too soon.  She caught up to me around 3.5 miles, then passed me and I couldn't keep up.  She did awesome today!  Her AP was 8:45 which makes me feel good because that means I was at least in the 9's and not the 10's which is a good pace right now.  I was more tired at the end of the run because I had run harder then when no one was chasing me.  I guess it is good motivation for her to catch me and good motivation for me to not get caught too soon.

I had a tough morning today.  It started last night when I realized my ipod was missing.  I had it sitting on my piano after a piano lesson.  The neighborhood kids were over and then in the evening the ipod was gone.  There is a family with three kids on our street, the kids are often at our house.  They do not have a good home life and I feel bad for them.  They are always hungry and I feed them all the time and treat them really well.  The thought of them stealing my ipod made me so made because many people on our street shun them a bit and I have been nothing but nice.  And then they steal from me.  I did not know for sure if they took it, but it was the logical conclusion.  I went to bed mad and woke up still a bit angry about it.

When I woke up I was sleepy and didn't feel like running but I thought I better drag myself out and get some exercise.  Without music the running was not even close to fun.  Add to the sleepiness being angry, and my body was tired because I did a ton of work yesterday around the house.  Plus we are planning on hauling rocks this evening.  It was all too much.  So I only ran/walked 2 miles.  I decided to just run if I felt like it and walk when I was tired.  I didn't push myself at all which does make me a slacker today but it was good mental/emotional rejuvenation.

When I got home I stained some cupboard doors that needed one more coat and then when it wasn't so early, and right before the neighbor kids went to school I went over to inquire about my ipod.  Sure enough, they had it.  I was really nice to them but I do feel bad for the boy who took it because his mom was there for the conversation and I think he is going to be in trouble, and she doesn't seem like a very reasonable punisher.  I am glad my ipod is back, I need it to keep me going.

During my run I was thinking I really need to start swimming.  Running is the path of least resistance right now because I know how to do it, I get dressed and head out the door, simple.  Swimming is a bit scary because I don't really know how to swim.  I do know the basic strokes and how to swim but swimming laps, I have never done that before.  As running gets more uncomfortable I would like to make the transition into swimming to continue my fitness level.  I am writing all of this so that in the next few weeks I get myself to the pool and try it out.

How far along are you now?

From Tracy on Fri, Apr 30, 2010 at 09:57:27 from 209.175.177.37

I love swimming. Since I have been running longer distances, I have gotten away from it in the summers, but I think I am going to try laps some mornings this summer. Maybe. Because I know what you mean about running being easy because it's just about putting on some clothes and walking outside. So convenient.

Swimming will keep you in great shape once running gets too uncomfortable! Do you have somewhere nearby that would be convenient for you?

From Carolyn in Colorado on Fri, Apr 30, 2010 at 10:04:37 from 24.8.167.243

The great thing about swimming when you're pregnant is you can just let your belly hang out and it doesn't matter. I used to love my maternity swimming suit.

Swimming will be a little more complicated for you than running, but you can just dart down to the rec center, so it shouldn't be too bad.

Incidentally, I didn't think it felt as cold this morning as the thermometer said it was. It was actually kind of a nice morning, surprisingly.

Happy morning not being tired & having a good distance on your run.

Swimming is great exercise- dont' worry that you haven't done laps before. It's the same as hanging in the pool, you just move forward in a straight line. You can choose to use any stroke, or none at all...dog paddle if you want :-)

Good run Michelle! I've been doing a lot of swimming lately. I think it is definitely helping with my running so I'm pretty sure it will help you out as well. It does take a while to get comfortable with swimming laps but I'm sure you will get it down.

KP- I am 24 weeks now.

The sun was up earlier today, when I turned the corner by my house, there was glaring sunshine.  It was nice to not feel like it was so early.  However, there was a lot of wind today.  Running uphill into the wind is not a fun thing to do.  Once again, I am glad I fought off the stay in bed demons and got my run finished.  I have a busy day of preparations for a church Relief Society activity tonight on gardening, piano lessons, laundry, and kids.

It was a windy morning. Good job getting out. You're very consistent.

Were you wearing red today? I was coming up Cresthill Lane, south of University, and I could see a runner going up Cresthill on the other side of University. It was about 6:35, so I wondered if it was you, but the runner was too far away for me to tell.

Good luck with your busy day. I'm sorry I can't come to Relief Society tonight.

From vinh on Thu, May 06, 2010 at 06:55:56 from 75.77.22.187

Good run Michelle! 4.4 miles would drive me crazy. I would have to either run .1 more to make it 4.5 or run an extra .6 =)

You're doing great getting out of bed and fighting those demons. I'm curious too about your energy level now vs when you weren't running.

From Michelle on Fri, May 07, 2010 at 09:50:02 from 216.160.142.30

Carolyn- Traffic wasn't bad coming home. There was a bit of stop and go but nothing like 225 looked. I hope you're having a good time in CA!

Tracy and QP- I do have a lot of energy but I am usually a high energy person anyway. With other pregnancies I have ran until about 18-20 weeks and then switched to bike riding. As far as energy, I don't notice a ton of difference but I do notice a bit of size/weight difference. I have gained 10 pounds which isn't much for 25 weeks and people still tell me all the time that I don't look 6 months pregnant(even thought that is not true!) I hope the real benefit comes after when I bounce right back.

Vinh- I know .4 is kind of weird but it is my standard route that just makes sense because it is door to door around a big loop. I started out with it being a 4 mile loop and then walked the .4 home to cool down but now I think why walk? So I just run the extra .4 even with the strange total mileage :)

From Tracy on Fri, May 07, 2010 at 10:02:30 from 209.175.177.37

10 pounds--that's pretty darn good! And you will bounce back quicker after this great and healthy pregnancy.

My first pregnancy I was active, but not running, and I gained a lot of weight. My second I was doing great and exercising and thinking I was gaining a lot less than I had the previous pregnancy. I asked the doctor at one visit (at about 7 months) how I was doing in comparison. She told me I had gained EXACTLY the same weight.

After that I was so irritated that I just ate whatever I wanted and ended up gaining the same amount of weight anyway.

From Michelle on Fri, May 07, 2010 at 10:14:11 from 216.160.142.30

I am starting to feel that way a bit as the scale goes up and up I think, why not have a bowl of ice cream? I probably will gain another 10 pounds in the next 15 weeks but 20 total isn't bad.

From The Quiet Pirate on Fri, May 07, 2010 at 10:19:32 from 24.199.205.252

I have the same .4 at the end of my loop run when I run it twice. I figued it all adds up in the end. It's 40 more calories burned too :-)!

I slept in this morning until I naturally woke up.  It was nice to not have an alarm wake me up.  I feel good about getting the 6 miles done this morning but I won't lie, it was hard.  For me pregnant running feels like the first few runs after you have had a lot of time off of running.  Do you remember how it feels to try to get back into shape and it is all you can do to make yourself not stop?  But the good thing is after a few tough runs it seems to get a bit easier and you see the rewards of you efforts.  Well, for me it is like running those first few runs over and over and over again, and it never gets easier.

Today was a tough mental run.  I almost talked myself out of running before I got out the door because there was snow on the ground and it looked really cold.  I can handle running with snow in January and February, but May?!  Luckily it wasn't as cold as it looked.  When I finally got out the door I thought maybe I would cut it short, but then I would feel like a slacker.  Then around mile 1 my belly started hurting.  I am ok running through aches and fatigue but probably shouldn't run through pain.  I walked for a block and then decided to tough it out.  In the end I got all 4.4 miles done but not very energetically.

Today my son is having a spiderman birthday party for his 4th birthday.  I still have a lot of preparations to do for the party.  It is going to be a busy and fast day with so much going on.  Luckily I ordered a cake instead of making one.  This is the first time I have ordered a cake, it felt weird at first because I usually make a fun cake for my kids but I think those days might soon be over.

I fully intended on running this morning and then plans changed.  The joys of motherhood!  My 4 year old son came in our room at 5:30 and my husband took him back to bed.  Then he came in again at 5:40.  I knew it would be a bad day if he didn't get more sleep because he usually wakes up around 8:30.  To try and make things better I went and laid in his bed with him to see if he would go back to sleep.  When 6:00 came and it was time to run he still wasn't asleep.  I decided it was more important for him to get some sleep then for me to run so I kept laying with him.  Finally he fell asleep, I tried to roll out of the bed and go ride the bike for a little exercise since  my husband was then leaving for work.(My running window is very little, barely enough for 4 miles which is why I don't do more.)  However, when I rolled out of his bed, he woke up and threw up.  I guess that is why he was up early and not sleeping good.  The noise woke up the older brother in the room and at 6:30, we were all awake what a joy.  We had some early morning commitments at the school and I had errands to do so I completely bagged exercise all together.  What a day, I am pretty tired and didn't even get a run in:(

I'm glad you had a good run.

Thanks for being my soprano section yesterday.

So here's a question for you. I struggle somewhat going up Gleneagles and then south on Quebec, and then University from Quebec to Cresthill feels much easier. But University from Quebec to Cresthill is all slightly uphill. How does that University stretch feel to you since you hit that first, before getting to the Gleneagles and Cresthill part? I'm just wondering it the University stretch feels easier to me because it comes right after a harder section, or if it's really just a fairly easy stretch.

Carolyn- I also think the University stretch is easier but I have just come up to Quebec from my house and that always feels tough to start a run with the uphill. I think it probably feels easier because it is slightly uphill instead of the steep Gleneagles hill. Even though it doesn't feel to hard by the time I get close to Cresthill I start feeling a bit tired and always feel good once I reach Cresthill and have the hill behind me.

I am having a hard time getting running miles in this week.  I was feeling good this morning when I set out to run but within the first mile I had three pain attacks.  It was almost like I was going into labor, though it is way to early for that.  I felt intense abdominal pain and my stomach got really hard.  I walked through the pain then tried running again.  When this happened the 3rd time in the first mile I decided running further wasn't going to happen today, so I walked home and rode the bike for 45 minutes and finished with some push-ups.  Hopefully I will feel better tomorrow and can get a little running in, I don't want to give up running just yet.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 10:42:28 from 24.8.167.243

I think that turning back was the right decision. Running is not important enough for you to push through pain like that right now.

From RAD on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 15:23:05 from 67.172.229.125

I ditto Carolyn's comment! Pain like that is never a good sign. I honestly wish I had some some days :) My body doesn't know how to labor w/out pitocin! Not a single contraction for me...with or without running. My doc is pretty surprised, but not me! If it wasn't for modern medicine I think I'd still have my first child growing inside me 9 years later!!!

Keep listening to that body and do what it tells you. The hardest thing I've learned about running pregnant is to listen to my body, to slow when needed and push only if given it. As runners you're SO used to putting off pain and pushing through everything, but when prego you've got to change the mentality and put your body first. VERY difficult for me!! You're doing a great job of it so far, and I'm glad you still got a good workout in! KEEP IT UP!

I did actually run today and had a successful run!  I felt great and pretty confident.  Usually during my run I might see 2-3 other runners out but this morning I saw about 10!  I guess the lighter warmer mornings has people recommitting to exercise.  It is fun to see more people out.

When I got home my son was awake and needed a million things from me and then the day got busy and I didn't sit at the computer once until now(5:00 p.m.)  That is abnormal for me but I did get a ton done today.  My house is clean, I painted my daughter's dresser white, bought garden suppplies, did visiting teaching, a little grocery shopping, and tonight we are watching some of our friends kids and planting our garden.  I am looking forward to 8:30 when the kids are all in bed, babysitting is done, and my husband and I can sit and watch TV.  That is mostly the only time I sit down for an extended time, I am pretty tired by the end of the day.

It was really hard to get out of bed this morning but I knew my neighbor was waiting for me so I dragged myself out of bed and got out the door.  Of course, I am glad I did.  My neighbor has been having some ankle problems so she wanted a slow run this morning.  Slow is what she got, really slow.  I never time myself, I just run the miles.  Well, today my friend had her garmin, how depressing.  I didn't think we were going that slow but wow!  Out miles were between 10:40 and 11:00 pace.  I have slowed down a ton!  I am still just focusing on getting the miles in and the pace doesn't matter too much.  I am OK with running slow I just didn't realize I was that slow.  I do think we went a tiny bit slower today because we were talking.

I was concerned about running today and when I started the pain in my lower left abdominal area came back quickly.  I was really bummed.  I walked for a block and then tried running again.  I walked twice in the first half mile but then I was able to complete the rest of the run without walking.  The great part about the run is that my neighbor caught up with me quickly and we ran together.  The time went by so fast and it was enjoyable to catch up with her a little.  I am glad I didn't have to cut the run short today.

Tracy, I think you are right. I might start out with walking every morning. Especially because the first part is all uphill. I am thinking I should walk to the top and then start running.

I second the warm-up suggestions! I run SO much better after a little warm-up, and unfortunately I'm just figuring this out :) Today I did the elliptical first and I had a WONDERFUL run (it was only 1 mile, but still - I usually HATE the first mile!).

Today started out tough but I ended feeling great.  I tried to warm up a bit more, but when I started running I still had the pains I have been getting.  I ran/walked for the first 1.5 miles but then I was able to solid run the rest of the miles.  I am still counting the entire loop as miles even though a bit was walking.  I am actually excited that I did the whole loop instead of wimping out.  Also at the end I felt like I could keep going, I wasn't even tired.

I set out on my run this morning thinking of just running 4 miles if I could and then maybe adding some more at the end, if I was feeling well.  At mile 2 I pass the high school track, when I got there my ankles were hurting a bit and I though it might be nice to run on a softer surface for a mile and then take a short cut home.  So I ran a mile on the track and felt great, I decided to add .5 more and then another .5 and then I thought why not another mile?  So after the 2 miles to the track, 3 miles on the track I added one more mile on a short cut home and stopped at our garden.  We have a community garden plot which is nice but we have to water it with a hose.  I watered the garden and then walked home.  I was excited to be able to run 6 miles without the crazy pains that have been plaguing me the last two weeks.

I asked my doctor about the pain I get while running.  He didn't seem too concerned and said to keep running but not when the pain is there.  He also said there isn't really anything to do about it except have the baby.  So, 11 more weeks of running pain, yeah!  Actually that is assuming I run for 11 more weeks.

I didn't run at all today because my husband, Ben, ran his first marathon!  We went to cheer him on around mile 21 and then saw him at the finish line.  He looked strong both times we saw him.  I think it was a pretty good marathon experience for him especially considering his low mileage training.  We don't have his chip time yet but estimating from the clock it should be about 3:45:?  I am really proud of him and glad that it is done with for awhile.  Now he just has to recover from being stiff all over.  Ben says he his sore, but it wasn't terribly difficult.

The first half of the race was in rain which is better then hot sun but caused more chaffing issues for a lot of people because of the water.  Ben's nipples chaffed and he had two blood spots on his shirt.  He was in good company with a lot of people who had blood spots from chaffed nipples.

It is a little weird for me because I was supposed to run this race until I found out I was pregnant and changed plans.  It is nice to be able to walk around and not hobble around but bitter sweet that I didn't run it with him.

I'm with Tracy, simply getting out (especially at 6AM!) at this point is a good thing! I'm glad the cramping went away, and I hope it doesn't come back for at least another 7 weeks! :)

Maybe Utah just like pregnant women running, so it makes it easy for us to run!

Woops, I wrote today's entry on Monday.  On Monday there was no running, we just drove home.

How was the drive?

From Michelle on Wed, Jun 16, 2010 at 09:57:04 from 71.212.190.146

The drive went well. It was nice to have Ben with us instead of doing it alone like I had the past two times. I wish it was half as long, but it went OK.

This morning when I was getting dressed to go run I wondered if it was even worth getting up early to try and run anymore.  Sometimes I think I should just sleep in and forget about the running attempt.  I still covered a little over 3 miles and ran most of it but my ankles, and calves burned and my stomach pain/cramps are always there.  I think once I have the baby running will feel awesome.

Today when I was about a half mile from home I met another runner at an intersection.  She was in front of me just a bit and really running pretty slow.  Which says a lot if I say it was slow.  I knew I could pass her and my stomach wasn't in pain so I kicked it in and passed her but then I had to keep the pace up so I didn't look silly passing and then stopping.  I got a good little workout burst at the end and it was nice to run fast without pain.  Even thought I am slow and can't really compete with most people, show me a slow running and my competitive nature kicks in!

You're funny. I've had that same experience where I speed up to pass someone during a training run, and then I feel like slowing down, but I feel like I shouldn't do that when I've just pulled in front of someone.

I wondered if maybe I would see you out there today since I did my 6 mile loop, but I think I didn't get out quite early enough. Are you even going out to Cresthill and Gleneagles these days, or are you staying in your neighborhood?

From Michelle on Wed, Jun 16, 2010 at 10:18:16 from 71.212.190.146

It depends on the day. Most days I still make it up to Cresthill but then I cut through Cheese Ranch on Gleneagles instead of going all the way around. That is what I did this morning. Yesterday I turned into the Hansens's neighborhood, ran around Cheese Ranch a little and then around my neighborhood a bit.

45 minutes on the bike.  I didn't run today because my husband left for work early so we could pick him up earlier and go to the water park at Elitch Gardens.  Elitch Gardens is an amusement park and water park that we bought season passes to this year.  We have been twice so far and our kids love it.

This morning I decided to drive to the track and do my running on the track.  I have had more success with running when I am on the track.  I was able to do the whole 3.5  without having to stop from pain.  It was nice and slow, really slow but I did it.  I might start driving to the track more often.  The downside is it takes more time.  I got home a little late and was only able to do 3.5.  If I didn't have to worry about getting home for kids, I would probably have ran another 1.5 but I had to get home.

Did you run the whole direction the same time or did you switch it up? You should probably switch it up. I should come run on the track with you sometimes. We wouldn't have to stay together, but we could high 5 when we crossed paths.

From The Quiet Pirate on Sat, Jun 19, 2010 at 21:36:25 from 65.191.108.72

Michelle- it's nice you found that you can run on the track without having the cramps/pains that you've had out on the roads. I'm impressed with your dedication to keep running, and waking up early. I'm sure running will be a breeze and seem less complicated after delivery.

My daughter would die and go to heaven if I got her a summer pass to a water park. You're an awesome mom!

I didn't run today because we had a ton of yard work to do.  We spent 13 hours outside moving our existing fence 10 feet so it touched the sidewalk.  We used to have the sidewalk, then 10 feet of rock then our fence and yard.  What a waste of 10 feet, now our backyard is 10 feet bigger but it feels much bigger then that!  I was really sore and tired after the days work, a great day for no running.

This morning was wonderful.  My husband had a bit of extra time this morning because he had a meeting that was close by so he didn't have to drive into the office early.  We were able to sleep until 7:00 which felt great, then I went running and still had a bit of time with him when I got back.  I really like that extra hour of sleep!

My run felt good, I am thinking maybe I need a rest day in between runs now.  I took the weekend off and I think that is partly why I felt great this morning.  I think I will ride the bike tomorrow and then run again on Wednesday.  Then maybe my ankles, calves and shins won't feel like they are on fire because they will have had a little break.

This morning I walked to warm up a bit and when I got to the point to start my run there was a woman a little bit behind me.  I ran a bit faster pace to not let her pass me right away.  About a half mile later she pulled past me and said good morning.  She didn't run by really fast and watching her run barely in front of me I knew I could keep up with her.  So I kicked it in a tiny bit, caught up with her and asked if she minded if I ran with her.  It was nice to have someone to talk to and to push my pace a bit.  We ran pretty fast, I was surprised at how well I did.  When we neared the point where she was going to turn off, I was feeling really tired and glad we were done running together.  I slowed down after she left for just a bit and then walked home.  It was a good run, glad I went.

I am back from my long blog break.  We were out of town for 11 days and in the mountains with no internet for awhile so I couldn't blog and then it was just hard to get back into the habit.  I had such a great time on vacation it was really hard to come back last week.  I spent last week busy with a church activity, laundry, shopping for the scout's high adventure and then having my husband gone for the high adventure.  While he was gone, I painted the dining room furniture.  It looks really nice, I just have a few touch ups to do.  Whenever Ben goes out of town I always end up doing some crazy project to fill my time.  In running news, my absence of blogging does not mean I have not been running.  The running is going relatively well for 34 weeks pregnant.

I have been running a little less often but have been able to run 3-4 miles without stopping from pain.  I think cutting back from running everyday has allowed healing time so I don't experience as much abdominal pain while running.  I remember thinking, "if I can just keep running until 30 weeks that will be good, now I am 34 and still going, I think I look pretty silly with a giant belly but oh well.

I will be more diligent about actually reporting my running, but it is nothing spectacular.

YEAHHHH It's nice to have you back on the blog block. Glad you enjoyed your vacation. I think next time your husband does out of town, you should come to my house. I've got plenty of painting projects you could do with me. Painting scares me, so I never get started.

My daughter actually gave me painting (on a canvas) lessons for one of her personal progress goals. You know you need help with the young women are giving you lessons :-)

It's wonderful you're still able to run. Going every other day sounds like it was just the rest you needed. Congrats on still being able to run this far into your pregnancy.

This morning I was really tired and didn't want to run but I went out the door anyway.  Shortly after I started, my neighbor caught up with me and we ran together.  It was nice to have company.  Last week I ran a bit on Wednesday and Friday with Carolyn and my neighbor joined us on Friday.  It is fun to be able to talk and have conversation during a run.

After 2.5 miles this morning I was done.  So we walked home and had a nice chat while walking.
